Tokyo | Australia’s key allies in the Indo-Pacific have welcomed Anthony Albanese’s election as prime minister as they prepare to meet in Tokyo this week to discuss deepening security and economic ties aimed at countering China’s rising influence in the region.
Mr Albanese, to be accompanied by Penny Wong in her new role as foreign minister, is expected to arrive in Tokyo early Tuesday after being sworn in the day before. He is expected to hold one-on-one meetings with the leaders of the United States, Japan and India as well as attending the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) leaders summit during the brief visit.
