NLD's Myanmar election win good for business

Voters have given Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy another five years to transform the crony economy left behind by decades of military rule.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy is expected to push ahead with ambitious development plans in its second five-year term, after a strong showing in Myanmar's general election on Sunday.

International investors who have ventured into the emerging democracy have welcomed the NLD victory. With Myanmar's GDP growth set to flat-line this year because of the pandemic, the regulatory reforms and bureaucratic overhauls needed to attract development capital are even more pressing. The re-elected NLD government can build on the regulatory bedrock it put in place in its first term – and hopefully pick up the pace.
