Malaysia spends $7.2b to prop up economy

Jakarta | Malaysia's interim Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has unveiled a 20 billion ringgit ($7.2 billion) package to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 virus and boost domestic investment.

The stimulus package comes after a week of political drama that saw the collapse of the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition. Next week MPs in Malaysia's lower house of parliament are expected cast their vote for prime minister in a race that pits Dr Mahathir against his long-term political foe Anwar Ibrahim.
