Hong Kong/Canberra | The federal government has slammed Hong Kong’s sentencing of Australian pro-democracy activist Gordon Ng, which came just hours after President Xi Jinping hailed the vast improvement in bilateral relations in a meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Ng was among 45 dissidents who Hong Kong’s High Court on Tuesday sentenced to jail terms of up to 10 years, in a landmark national security trial that has destroyed the city’s once strong democracy movement and drawn international condemnation.
