As Anthony Albanese peered into the leafy panda enclosures in China’s sweltering city of Chengdu, criticism of the prime minister’s unusually long six-day trip was building back home.

Unlike previous visits that produced splashy joint communiques or major trade breakthroughs, this one yielded no single trophy announcement to parade in Canberra.
