Australia doubles down on its subsea cable diplomacy in South Pacific

Tokyo | Australia is doubling down on its Quad pledge to lay further subsea cables in the Indo-Pacific, with an $18.6 million investment in a new centre to support digital connectivity in the region.

The rollout of undersea cables – which facilitate internet and data flows around the world – has become a major focus of the strategic competition between Western nations and China to gain influence in the Pacific.
