A warning for Australia in Trump’s new Japan trade deal

A security ally for seven decades and a key partner in US efforts to counter an increasingly assertive China, Japan thought it was on good footing. But it still had to concede a lot in tough talks.

Tokyo | Donald Trump’s “massive” trade deal with Tokyo hands Japan’s embattled car industry some much-needed relief and allays fears of even greater tensions between the US and one of its closest Asian allies.

But for Australia, another longtime US ally, the deal announced by the US president on Wednesday sends a thoroughly different message: loyalty to Washington is no guarantee of reward.
