The surprise pay rise tucked away in minimum wage ruling

The Fair Work Commission has canvassed lifting the lowest minimum wage by 3.7 per cent for up to 195,000 workers in next year’s review in a surprise move that has sparked employer alarm about mounting wage bills.

In unreported comments from Tuesday’s minimum wage decision, the commission’s wage panel proposed transitioning those on the lowest minimum rate, which hits $24.94 an hour from July 1, to a higher classification rate, soon to be $25.85 an hour, next year.
