Svitzer moves to axe union workforce controls

Svitzer will try to remove decades of union control over its workforce after two years of strikes and failed bargaining, potentially forcing hundreds of crew members onto minimum pay and conditions.

The country’s largest tug operator, whose workforce is critical in bringing cargo ships to port, applied to the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday to terminate its agreement with the Maritime Union of Australia and end its restrictions on rosters and recruitment.
