‘Nightmare’ shifts: Push to rule carer sleepovers as breaks, not work

Employers are seeking industry-wide changes so carers sleeping over at a client’s house can’t count that time towards overtime pay, sparking union accusations the employers are creating “nightmare” shifts.

Australian Industry Group, whose case kicked off in the Fair Work Commission on Monday, warned that unions’ “novel” interpretation of overtime was unfunded and threatened to blow out costs under the National Disability Insurance Scheme and send providers to the wall.
