The Victorian government’s wage cop has dropped the country’s first criminal charges over underpayments, in a case that has faced a High Court challenge and was supported by five Labor attorneys-general.

The Victorian Wage Inspectorate formally withdrew 94 criminal charges against regional restaurant The Macedon Lounge and owner Gaurav Setia for allegedly underpaying staff, after noting the Albanese government was proposing its own wage theft laws.
