Half of apprentices drop out and everybody loses, minister says

Taxpayers are getting poor value for money from a multibillion-dollar apprenticeship scheme in which almost half of apprentices and trainees do not finish their training, Skills Minister Brendan O’Connor says.

In an address to the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday, Mr O’Connor said that lifting the apprentice and trainee completion rate from the current 55.7 per cent would be one of his department’s most significant challenges.
