Outsiders could be forgiven for thinking that Scott Wyatt, chief executive of Viva Energy, is a man who objects to change. After all he has spent nearly his entire professional career at effectively the same company. He has never even formally had to apply for a promotion.

But the interpretation would be unfair. Wyatt knows his task is to be a change agent.
