Public trust falls as division and conspiracies take hold

Public trust in government, business and media has fallen as people increasingly turn to their employers, co-workers and neighbours as their most trusted sources of information, the closely watched Edelman Trust Barometer reveals.

Australia has suffered one of the globe’s largest falls in public trust, after rising to record levels in the early stages of the pandemic, and a worrying divide has emerged between low- and high-income earners as conspiracy theories, division and distrust take hold.
