After 142 years, the Australian Club decides it’s too soon for women

The Australian Club in Melbourne, one of a few clubs where businessmen socialise, network and conduct business mostly without the presence of women, decided that after 142 years the time had not come to allow the other sex to join.

A survey of the club’s 1500-odd members did not produce majority support for change, according to an email sent on Tuesday afternoon by president Michael Bartlett, a former institutional stockbroker.
