When John Dewar closes his office door for the final time on December 22, he will depart an institution materially different from the one he walked into 12 years ago.

The retiring boss of La Trobe University will leave with a healthy balance sheet in place – it was one of just five universities nationally to record a surplus in 2022 – and one that is much surer of its mission and place in the world.
