Young people could be freed from the burden of huge student debts and industry guaranteed a pipeline of fresh talent if more companies were prepared to cover student loans, says a leading vice-chancellor.

In addition, the only purposeful way of getting people from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds to go to university, and to stay until they graduate, is to establish a means-tested, government-backed bursary system to provide financial support during the years of study.
