Underfunding of public schools fuels achievement gap, analysis shows

Pressure is growing on the federal government to make up for a decade-long shortfall in state funding for public schools, requiring up to $4.5 billion a year in taxpayer dollars.
Under the current funding agreement, which has been extended to the end of 2024, the federal government contributes 20 per cent of funding to schools, while state and territory governments are expected to fund 80 per cent.
