Is it freedom of speech or just insulting your colleagues?
The question of whether academics should have the freedom to speak their version of the truth without fear or favour is in the spotlight after marine physicist Peter Ridd’s appeal against his former employer James Cook University reached the High Court.
The case revolves around disciplinary action and the eventual sacking of Dr Ridd after he disparaged the scientific rigour and accuracy of research done on the Great Barrier Reef by James Cook colleagues.
