What happens to our SMSF if we die together?
Self-managed super funds aren’t covered by wills, so special arrangements need to be in place for when the final member dies, or if the members die together.
John WasilievColumnistQ: We are a couple aged 66 and 62, and are the only members and individual trustees of our SMSF. We started pensions and have a reversionary pension in place should one of us die. This would leave the survivor with an amount that is just over the transfer balance cap. My question relates to what happens to our super when the remaining spouse dies or if we die together. I know the SMSF isn’t covered by our wills. Is there some direction we should put in place linking it to our wills or directing who should administer it and how it should be distributed? I would aim to be out of super before we both die, but you never know. Pip.
A: Organising and documenting what might happen to your super in different circumstances should you or your partner die is a smart idea given, as you say, you never know what might happen in the future.
