These odd bedfellows are united by a belief in holding assets through market volatility.

If you bought $1000 worth of bitcoin in early 2014, it would be valued at more than $200,000 today. That’s assuming that you (a) held on to it and (b) consequently stomached some eye-watering price reversions along the way.

As it turns out, a typo would become shorthand for this sort of suck-it-and-see investing experience: a post in an online crypto forum in 2013 titled “I AM HODLING” would accidentally birth the “hold on for dear life” – or HODL – moniker.
