In November 2022, retired music teacher Christine Collins, 79, convinced a friend to drive her from Sydney to Canberra so she could knock on a stranger’s door and hand over a $14,000 cheque and $11,000 in cash.

Unwell with breast cancer and kidney failure, Collins was unknowingly in the thrall of cryptocurrency scammers who had hacked her computer.
