The Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, was a thoroughly loathsome man. He conquered the Jews, ransacked their holy temple and plundered its sacred golden vessels.
His son, Belshazzar, exulting in his father's triumph, decided to throw a party in his honour. To show his disdain for his father's victims, Belshazzar used the holy temple vessels to serve his guests wine.
