Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims has stood by his organisation's proposal to place greater regulatory scrutiny on the algorithms that run big tech platforms such as Google and Facebook, and to police any future local acquisitions by the tech giants, saying critics have either misunderstood the plans or overstated the repercussions.
The topics were raised in a collection of 23 recommendations in the regulator's landmark Digital Platform Inquiry final report, which was released at the end of last month, but have since attracted criticism from members of the local tech scene.
