Origin Energy ignored trademark breach, lawsuit alleges
Key Points
- Origin Net is suing Origin Energy for trademark infringement.
- Origin Energy tried to claim the trademark in 2018, but Origin Net already owned it.
- The ASX-listed energy company expanded their internet business under the Origin name regardless.
Regional internet provider Origin Net is suing Origin Energy for trademark infringement, alleging the energy giant ignored the smaller company’s ownership of the “Origin” logo as it expanded its own wholesale internet business to reap more than $100 million a year.
The lawsuit in the Federal Court comes as the ASX-listed energy giant reels from the collapse of a $20 billion takeover plan at the end of last year and now considers a demerger.
