Westpac chair John McFarlane cooling on Jes Staley
Joe AstonColumnistWestpac’s outgoing chairman John McFarlane surely grimaced when he read the latest revelations on Friday of former Barclays chief executive Jes Staley’s “profound” friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
McFarlane appointed Staley to run Barclays in 2015 then retired as the British bank’s chairman in May 2019. Epstein was arrested in New York on charges of sex-trafficking underage girls in July 2019 and died in his prison cell the following month.
