Ding dong! The resignation statement from Peter Costello was lobbed late on the Sunday of the King’s Birthday holiday weekend, and there were few on hand to herald the end of the great man.

But it did bring an end to three days of abject embarrassment for Nine Entertainment, which publishes The Australian Financial Review.
