When Blackstone executive vice-chairman Tony James declared a month ago that the US private equity giant was out of the race for Investa Office Fund, it came as an off-the-cuff remark during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box Asia.

But it certainly made Australia's corporate watchdog sit up and listen.
