Victoria byelection results could be terminal for Albanese

Saturday’s state byelections in Victoria for the nominally safe Labor seat of Werribee and the nominally safe Greens seat of Prahran should give us a pretty good idea of the prospects for survival of Anthony Albanese’s federal Labor government, which must face the voters sometime on or before May 17.

On current indications, despite their safe status, the odds favour the state Liberals picking up both seats on Saturday. If correct, the survival prospects for the Albanese government are looking grim indeed. For the Victorian state ALP government, they’re a lot worse.
