Tax rebate for bulk-billing GPs hasn’t averted payroll tax fight

GPs will continue to push for a blanket exemption to payroll tax, despite saving $4 million in tax under the first eight months of a NSW scheme to boost bulk billing.

On Thursday, the NSW government will reveal that GP clinics with wages bills totalling $74 million have qualified for exemptions to payroll tax because they have met targets of bulk billing 80 per cent of services in metro Sydney or 70 per cent in the rest of NSW. That translates to a $4 million tax saving so far.
