The deputy mayor of a Sydney council, who is facing a no-confidence vote over his links to disgraced billionaire Huang Xiangmo, was endorsed by China's Communist Party when he ran as a Labor Senate candidate.

Simon Zhou, who sits as an independent on Ryde Council, was backed by the powerful International Department in Beijing when he sought an upper house seat at the 2016 federal election.
