Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas says housing is the “defining issue of our times” and the government will rein in spending that is preventing the private sector from building more homes.

The state has a projected net debt of nearly $250 billion by 2027, which would soak up more than $33 million a day in interest, leaving Victorians bracing for a horror budget to be released on Tuesday.
