Nick Xenophon, Pauline Hanson open to university budget cuts

The majority of the Senate crossbench is prepared to consider the government's university fees policy, giving the government a glimmer of hope that four years of policy inertia may come to an end.
The Turnbull government needs the support of 10 of the 12 Senate crossbenchers to pass its $2.8 billion policy to lift tuition fees by 7.5 per cent, impose higher repayments on student loans and add a 2.5 per cent efficiency dividend on universities.
