NSW Premier Chris Minns has ruled out tackling a statewide housing crisis by imposing a Victoria-style empty home tax on property owners to free up more dwellings, arguing his government is intent on boosting affordability and supply by building new homes and targeting planning issues.
A day after Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas expanded an empty home tax and unveiled a new levy on undeveloped residential sites to free up more homes and land for housing, Mr Minns said NSW would tackle its supply and affordability challenges through a planning and zoning shake-up to bring more density closer to Sydney’s centre.
