NSW Premier Chris Minns says the Tomago smelter north of Sydney is an important employer that his government is looking to help with an “effective intervention” to stave off potential closure due to crippling power bills.
Minns confirmed on Thursday that both the NSW and federal governments were in talks about the future of the smelter after The Australian Financial Review revealed last week that the plant was seeking an “eye-watering” bailout that could cost billions to cope with rising energy costs.
