NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has prompted a senior minister to resign over a potential breach of ministerial standards as a crisis sparked by John Barilaro’s appointment to a US trade post claimed its first scalp.

The abrupt departure of Trade Minister Stuart Ayres – the second minister to go in a week – has triggered a race for the deputy leader’s position, to be decided by the party room on Tuesday.
