Yes or No won’t affect Australia’s standing on the world stage
But like Brexit, after the Voice referendum it will take many years for the country to come back together again regardless of the outcome.
Alexander DownerColumnistA friend in London sent me a WhatsApp message saying he was running a campaign to hold a referendum to abolish referendums! He had followed the Australian Voice referendum and said referendums “created hatred and division”. Living where he does, he knows the dust still hasn’t settled on the Brexit referendum. There are still barbed exchanges between the Remainers and Leavers.
This is particularly true when economic data is published. When the UK’s GDP figures were revised upwards recently, the Brexiteers said that because of Brexit the UK’s economy was growing faster than the economies of France, Germany and Italy. With the persistent inflation numbers, the Remainers have been saying that inflation is caused by the reduction in uninhibited supply chains from Europe. Both of these arguments are pretty fatuous, but nevertheless it illustrates the point that the referendum debate has left the country more divided than it was.
