That’s a wrap
That’s a wrap for Need to Know this Thursday, August 25.
Here are some of today’s key events:
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a royal commission ino the robodebt debacle that resulted in a $1.2 billion court settlement. Former Queensland Supreme Court chief judge Catherine Holmes will head the royal commission.
- A Russian missile attack killed 22 civilians and set a passenger train on fire in eastern Ukraine yesterday as the country marked its Independence Day under heavy shelling, officials in Kyiv said. A Ukrainian official has also confirmed another missile attack in Kyiv’s north this morning.
- Anthony Albanese, like Treasurer Jim Chalmers, won’t endorse the ACTU’s demand for sector-wide bargaining. The prime minister has told reporters in Sydney the union movement speaks for itself. “And employers speak for themselves. At the moment, there is discussion taking place in the lead-up to the Jobs and Skills Summit - that’s a good thing,” he said.
- Economists including former US treasury secretary Larry Summers and a senior adviser in the Obama administration criticised US President Joe Biden’s plan to forgive up to $US890 billion ($1.28 trillion) in student debt, saying it will stoke inflation and force spending cuts or tax increases.
