The ever-wily ASIO chief, Mike Burgess, nailed it when he warned there was a group of people, of no particular political stripe, motivated by “a toxic cocktail of conspiracies, grievances and anti-authority beliefs”.
“The reach of extremist content online means individuals are radicalising very quickly – in days and weeks – so the time between flash to bang is shorter than ever,” he said in his annual assessment last year.
