The Defence Department has told staff it spent four times more on hiring consultants than feeding all military personnel in 2022-23, and could run Australia’s entire submarine fleet for a year with the same money.

Defence issued a stunning hiring guide for consultants from the big five this year, telling bureaucrats to think about how far the money could go towards other priorities and sparking fury among contractors.
