Rising COVID-19 case numbers and warnings from health officials to avoid crowded indoor areas could spoil Christmas for the hospitality sector as wary employers opt to cancel their end-of-year events.

Staff at ASX-listed telco Swoop had planned to hold their Christmas party in Newcastle on Friday night, but cancelled on Tuesday after 224 cases were reported in the surrounding Hunter New England health district, up from 28 cases the day before.
