Western Australian state Liberal MPs are being urged not to ignite a messy leadership battle after the party’s heavy state election loss as it could derail Peter Dutton’s hopes to take Perth seats off Labor in the federal poll.

Former TV presenter and Perth mayor Basil Zempilas is among a fresh crop of Liberal MPs who could challenge Libby Mettam’s leadership, which was thrown into doubt by the party’s poor election showing on Saturday.
