Peter Dutton has flagged abolishing or softening Labor’s vehicle emissions standards after the industry warned manufacturers were struggling to meet the targets and would end up being slugged with penalties, which could be passed on to car buyers.

The Coalition voted against the policy last year and Mr Dutton said the warnings that were sounded then about the emissions trajectory beng too steep had been proven correct.
