Former prime minister Tony Abbott warns Donald Trump risks being branded a “loser” early in a potential second presidential term if he abandons support for Ukraine and hands Russian President Vladimir Putin a military victory.

Speaking on the 10th anniversary of Russian-backed rebels shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, Mr Abbott also said the West’s failure to stand up to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and eastern Ukraine in 2014 had only emboldened Mr Putin.
