Defence Minister Richard Marles arrived in Ukraine just as those final, sombre notes of the Last Post receded for another year.

His announcement of further, though modest, Australian assistance followed US congressional approval of $US60 billion ($92 billion) for Kyiv. Australia again marches in lock step with the American coalition in Ukraine.
