The race to define Peter Dutton gets dirty

Despite nearly 23 years in federal parliament, Peter Dutton is “not well-defined” in voters’ minds, research shows. This week, the race to shape people’s views turned dirty.

Peter Dutton has been in parliament for nearly 23 years, but pollsters say voters still don’t know what to make of him. 

Almost three years ago, around dinner time on a Tuesday, two groups of undecided voters joined a pollster’s focus group to talk about the two men running to be prime minister.

It was the first week of the election campaign and two journalists, The Australian Financial Review’s political editor Phillip Coorey and this writer, huddled around a screen to get a vibe of what voters in marginal seats thought of Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese.
