Just a few minutes into question time on Monday, it was apparent beyond any doubt that the next election is sucking the life out of federal politics.

Fresh from a six-week break, and with an election due in less than nine months, MPs headed back to Canberra ready to work. Labor had a refreshed frontbench line up to debut and the government was excited to herald Australia’s best Olympic performance.
