The era of majority rule is ending. Here’s what happens next

An ethnically diverse society – less amenable to political labelling – is leading a profound shift from the old two-party divide towards European-style minority government.

Last week a political dam finally burst, pointing to a shift away from traditional Australian majoritarian politics to European-style minority government.

The Tasmanian election, federal and state byelections, plus the Brisbane City Council vote, suggest a phalanx of Greens, minor groupings, teals and other independents could wag the policy tail of future Labor or Coalition-led minority governments.
