Surging WA government costs eat into $3b iron ore windfall

Surging iron ore prices have delivered the West Australian government an extra $3 billion in royalties, but a massive increase in state expenses will claim almost two-thirds of the windfall.
Treasurer Rita Saffioti revealed a forecast $3.7 billion operating budget surplus for the 2023-24 financial year on Tuesday, declaring the most resilient state in Australia had passed its inflation peak.
