Supermarket break-up push ‘a wider economic risk’

Fed up with political interference from federal parliament, business leaders are calling on the major parties to reject a Greens plan to forcibly break up Coles and Woolworths, warning the proposed powers would push up grocery prices and undermine job security.

A bill to give the Federal Court new powers to split grocery retailers found to be misusing their market power will be considered in the Senate as soon as Wednesday. Led by the Greens senator Nick McKim, the populist push comes amid consumer anger over living costs and frustration at market concentration of the supermarket giants.
